How to do MLM online is something that people have been wondering about for years. Why? Because MLM (i.e. Network Marketing) is frickin’ hard, that’s why!

Doing it online doesn’t make it any ‘less’ hard, but there’s one enormous advantage: you don’t have to talk to your friends, neighbors, co-workers, family, etc. anymore (unless you feel like it). In fact, you can keep it a secret if you really want.

So, how does it work?

Below, I’m going to tell you the things that you’re going to need in order to experience online MLM success. By the way, they’re all connected and overlap each other. I’ll even tell you what not to do.

You’re Going to Have to Build an Engaging Online Audience

If you already have a large social media presence, then congratulations; you’re way ahead of the game. If not, you’ll have to create one – and it’s not as hard as you think.

Speaking of which, if you don’t have a bubbly personality (or don’t think you do) then that’s another thing you can create online. It’s a beautiful thing!

Remember that MLM is talking to people. That’s what it is. The difference is that you’re going to be doing it online, that’s all. And you’re going to be doing it a lot.

For example, one thing you’ll need to do is repurpose any content that you create. That new blog post or article can be turned into various social media posts, a podcast or a short video – or visa versa. In other words, shower the world with your fresh messages in every format you can.

However you prefer to personally communicate online, consistency is the key. This must be done regularly. You’re looking to create a community that revolves around you.

You’re Going to Need a Website

It can be a blog (like this one), a well-designed social media page or something else. In any case, ‘ya gotta have it’. That site is your online business card. But it’s more than that.

This is where you showcase yourself, provide value & education and build that audience. It’s also where (in some form or fashion) you’ll be using your autoresponder. In fact, the autoresponder is going to be your most important tool for doing MLM online – or anything else. 

It’s the foundation. It’s how you build your ‘list’ (i.e. email list). Long term, that’s going to be your most valuable asset.

But in all of this, here’s what’s really important: be yourself. Be you, and not someone else. What you put on your site, what you write there (and everywhere else) needs to be yours – and yours alone.

People have to buy you before they’ll buy anything else. In fact, most people aren’t ready to buy when they first find your site anyway. That’s why you never throw a sales message in someone’s face right away.

And another thing; you never want to copy & paste someone else’s style and content on your site. It’s unethical and boring. In fact, boring is something you never want to be. That’s horrible!

You’re Going to Have to Learn About Creating Web Traffic

Without it, what good is your website?

If you’re a trained content creator, or a decent writer, then blog posts and articles are a great way to get organic traffic to your site. There’s more to it than that, though. You’ll also need to know about Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and how to style your content accordingly.

You can write a literary masterpiece, and no one will ever see it if it isn’t SEO optimized. It’s a skill you can learn. In fact, there are wonderful online courses and tons of books about everything I’m mentioning here.

There is definitely a learning curve to all this. It’s true. And the learning never really stops because the web is always changing.

That’s why some are further ahead than others. But even if you’re a beginner, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. You have to start where you are.

Be warned, however. There’s a ton of junk out there (on Facebook and elsewhere) about getting traffic to a site. You will lose more money if you believe these people. Besides, website hits (traffic) are worthless if the people seeing your site have no interest in what you’re talking about.

The best web traffic – by FAR – is the kind where people are searching for a solution to a problem, and you’ve got the answer.

In case you haven’t guessed yet, I’m not a true believer in big-budget advertising on the Internet. But I do pay a bit here and there, and you probably will too.

You’re Going to Have to Stay Inspired and Motivated

Building your online business will take time. So does Network Marketing in general, unless you start with a huge list of personal contacts (and/or many thousands of followers on social media).

When things don’t happen quickly, especially if you’re working hard at it, it can get you down. I know. You can burn out and stop.

But you have to look at this as a long-term project – a lifestyle, really. Even if you just want to stick your toe in the water and ‘try it out’, give it two years at a minimum.

If that sounds too long, think of it this way: those years are going to pass no matter what you’re doing. You might as well be hard at work on passive residual income.

There are timeless sayings about being consistent and persistent. I like this one:

“Success isn’t always about greatness. It’s about consistency. Consistent hard work
leads to success. Greatness will come.” – Dwayne Johnson (aka ‘The Rock’)

Everyone has their own motivation. My big ‘why’ is my age, because no one can retire anymore. So, for me, residual passive income is 100% necessary – and I prefer Network Marketing over rent houses.

You know what? You’re going to have to figure out your ‘why’ – why you must succeed. If you don’t, sooner or later you’ll be tempted to quit – and many do.

Don’t let that be you.

You’re Going to Have to Guard Your Reputation

Once you’ve built (and are growing) that audience, the worst thing you can do is sell them something you don’t believe in. Don’t dump garbage on people. The allure of a quick buck is strong, but don’t do it.

This also goes back to the autoresponder. It does the selling for you! You’ve gotta’ be careful, though.

If you abuse your email list, you’ll lose your audience and damage your reputation. That’s really bad, because (as I’ve already mentioned) the autoresponder truly is the cornerstone of everything you’ll do online. It’s that important.

Never bomb your list with daily messages and offers. These people believed in you enough to opt-in and agree to receive messages in their inbox. In return, give them the courtesy of respect.

And another thing: never lie. Don’t brag about money that you’ve never earned or how quick and easy your MLM program is when neither are true.

When people find out that you’ve lied, you’ll never get them back – not unless you change your name and start all over! Don’t forget that you’re always one step away from screwing up royally. So be careful.

You’re Going to Have to Choose the Right Program

At this point, it’s crucial to mention something. When you’re doing MLM online (or Network Marketing period), choose a reputable company to represent.

Check them out first. Is this an established and well-capitalized company that isn’t going to go out of business? Is it the type of business (and product) that isn’t going to get sued out of existence or that the government might shut down?

Is the product or service something that people actually want and need? Generally, I prefer a digital product for online MLM because you can’t hand someone a sample over the internet. Also, physical products can’t be shipped everywhere, and it gets expensive when going overseas.

On the other hand, a program might only function well in the United States. That’s not necessarily a deal-killer. There are exceptions.

Important: Does the comp plan and genealogy system pay well and make sense? Do you have to buy a certain amount of product every month in order to earn commissions? Is it a simple forced matrix or some complicated binary system?

It’s a lot to think about, I know. Just don’t hitch your horse to the wrong wagon. You’ll waste years and tons of hard-earned cash.

You’re Going to Need a System

What do I mean by that?

It means that you’re going to have a daily and weekly To-Do List. But more than that, much of that system is going to be automated. It has to be.

Remember when I mentioned the autoresponder earlier? The ‘auto’ part should be a clue.

Another great thing about an automated system is that it can be duplicated – and duplication is the #1 goal in Network Marketing.

One critical mistake that a lot of people make is to create a system that’s too complicated. You might be able to understand it, but the average person has to as well.

Just remember: a confused mind says NO!

You’re going to Need to Be Patient and Not Get Overwhelmed

I know I’ve touched on many subjects here and there’s a science to each one. It’s definitely a learning process. A lot of people – like me – like to skip the instructions and just start pushing buttons until something happens.

It doesn’t work like that. There’s a bunch of stuff that you’ll need to know and understand for this to work. There’s no way to sugarcoat it. It’s a LOT.

That’s why ‘information overload’ can be a real problem when trying to do MLM online. There’s just so much to learn, so much information out there and only so many waking hours in a day.

So, this is going to take time. Some do it faster, but it will be a multi-year project for most. I’m talking about building a real, sustainable business here.

The danger is that this can become an obsession. Don’t let it consume you. Let yourself live.

Go easy on yourself, because the good news is that you’ve got all the time in the world.

Keep your eye on the prize and you’ll find a way to master it. Along the way, you’ll discover that most of the hard work has already been done for you.
